The Owners live on a four-acre horse ranch in the Town of Danville, California. They have an older non-historic Craftsmen Style home with a single-car carport that they would like to eventually remove and replace with a new Modern Farmhouse Style home. While the construction of the main house is underway, they envisioned they would reside in this new cottage and be able to use a new stand-alone two-car garage, and still maintain the day-to-day operation of their horse ranch. Once completed, they would move into the main house and change the use of this cottage as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), that could be rented by the property's caretaker.
As part of the design program for this project, the owners wanted to install roof-mounted photovoltaic panels in addition to other energy-saving features that would allow them to live and operate their ranch off-the-grid and without the full need of electricity supplied by PG and E.
Features we included in this design for the 1,166 sq. ft. cottage include: One large bedroom and one small bedroom that can also be used as an office, gourmet kitchen, full bathroom, laundry/mudroom combination, outside access half-bath that can be used by the ranch personnel, and a large living/dining room combination. Both the larger bedroom, kitchen, and living/dining rooms all were designed with volume ceilings, various other interior trim and architectural details.
